The Olympics may be over, but there is still plenty of tennis excitement on offer at the ATP Western & Southern Open currently underway in Cincinnati, Ohio (August 17).

One player to watch out for is Roger Federer, who looks like a man on a mission as he aims to make amends for his surprisingly lacklustre performance against Andy Murray in the London 2012 gold medal match.

The Fed Express had a favourable draw, opening his tournament with a bye, before making light work of 29-year-old Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.

He then met Australian Bernard Tomic in the round of 16, where he cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

"Overall I'm happy, but it's hard to judge my game in these quick conditions," said Federer after the match.

"I'm especially happy with my ball-striking, though my serve was a bit off. Overall it was a good performance. I'm playing as well as I want to right now."

Federer will now line up against Mardy Fish in the quarterfinals, who he holds a 7-1 record over in past encounters.

There is more good news for Federer, as he will not have to play Murray in this event – the world number three was sent packing after a shock third round loss to Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-4.

It was Chardy's second big upset of the tournament, having earlier knocked out Andy Roddick in the opening round, but he will have to play out of his skin if he wants to advance further – he will meet Juan Martín del Potro in the quarterfinals.

The other Australian in the men's tournament, Lleyton Hewitt, had the edge over Mikhail Youzhny in his opening match but lost to Serbian Viktor Troicki in the round of 32.

Getting involved in tennis is a great way of keeping fit and making new friends, so why not pick up a racket and get involved by coming down to Strathfield Sports Club.
