Andy Murray resisted a determined fight back from Novak Djokovic to win the US Open and claim his first Grand Slam title in New York this morning (September 10, local time).

Windy conditions forced a number of unforced errors throughout the match, although both players seemed determined not to let it affect their performance and put on an exciting contest for the capacity crowd.

Murray looked like he would dominate his Serbian opponent after winning a tough tie breaker in the first set and pulling out to a two set lead.

But Djokovic showed the skill and determination that has positioned him near the top of the world rankings to pull back two sets of his own and tie the match.

With his back against the wall and momentum against him, Murray took advantage of a fatigued Djokovic to seal the final set and claim a 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 victory.

It was the first time since 2009 that the men's US Open decider had gone the distance, and caps off a terrific 2012 US Open in which the final of the women's tournament was also fiercely contested.

The thrilling result adds to what has already been an incredible year for the 25-year-old Murray, who already has a gold medal to his name after defeating Roger Federer in the finals of the London 2012 Olympic tennis tournament back in August.

It also goes some way to making amends for the disappointment of the 2011 Australian Open final, in which Djokovic dominated Murray in a 4-6, 2-6, 3-6 straight sets victory.
