Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic has made it a three-peat, defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the China Open in Beijing to win the event for the third year in a row earlier this week (October 7, local time).
It was a well-deserved victory for the world number two, who barely broke a sweat all tournament after being pushed to three sets in his opening match against German Michael Berrer.
Djokovic defeated Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-final to lock in his place against Tsonga, who qualified for the deciding match after his round four opponent Feliciano Lopez retired in the second set with injury.
Early on it looked like we might be in for a tightly contested final, as Tsonga started strongly with a very competitive first set which went down to a tiebreaker.
However Djokovic got the better of his opponent there, and went into the second set with a significant mental advantage which allowed him to take the match 7-6(4), 6-2.
"I am planning to come back to the China Open next year," said Djokovic after claiming the title.
"It's been one of my most successful tournaments. This is where I love to play. I love the conditions and, as I mentioned before, I have lots of support from the fans who are very loyal and very nice."
The result is Djokovic's fourth in ATP tennis tournaments for 2012, his last coming at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada in August.
He will now turn his attention towards knocking longtime rival Roger Federer off the top of the world rankings, with the two men potentially facing off at the Barclays ATP World Tour Final in November.
Djokovic and Federer are two of only four players to have already qualified for the eight man event, alongside Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal.
