Australia Day Weekend at SSC

This weekend is all about the Australian Open, as we bring you all the live finals action from Melbourne Park. It’s the business end of the tournament and the cream of world tennis has certainly risen to the top as we wait to see who will be crowned champions in the year’s first grand slam.

The top four male seeds have all made it to the semi-finals, with world number one and defending champ Novak Djokovic taking on Spain’s David Ferrer. While the great Roger Federer has qualified for his tenth consecutive semi-final at the Australian Open and will take on Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray in the other match.

In the women’s draw, the top two seeds Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova look on course to meet in a glamorous final. They may not have it all their own way though, having to play Sloane Stephens and Li Na respectively, in order to book a birth for the weekend’s final.

Our Aussie girls Casey Delacqua and Ashleigh Barty will be contesting the women’s doubles final after the unseeded pairing cruised through their semi. They are the first all-Aussie pairing to achieve the feat since 1977. There will no doubt be a patriotic home crowd on hand Friday night when they take on Italian top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, so why not join us and help cheer them on!

There will also be plenty of football action this weekend with Round 18 of the A-League set to excite. Friday night will kick things off with the top of the table clash between Central Coast and Adelaide. Saturday will see another triple header as part of Australia Day festivities. The highlight being the blockbuster contest between a resurgent Sydney FC and Victorian rivals Melbourne Victory.

In the other games Western Sydney Wanderers will continue the inter-state rivalry when they host Melbourne Heart. Both teams will be chasing an invaluable three points to continue seasons that have exceeded pundits’ expectations. Perth will play Brisbane in the other match, with both sides desperate for a win. Wellington will play Newcastle on Sunday afternoon to round out proceedings.

The summer of cricket also continues at SSC this weekend when Australia play Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 International on Australia Day. If you can’t make it to the SCG, join us at the Club where we’ll be showing all the big hits and wickets as part of the day’s celebrations.

To all our members and their guests we hope you have an enjoyable Australia Day long weekend. Hopefully the fine weather holds and whether you’re watching or participating we hope to see you down at Strathfield Sports Club, where we have all your sporting requirements covered!
