The highly anticipated return of the English Premier League kicked off over the weekend, with numerous managers taking charge of their new sides for the first time in England’s top-flight.
Liverpool got their season off to the best possible start in the first game of matchday one with a 1-0 victory over Stoke at Anfield. Daniel Sturridge was the hero for the Reds slotting a magnificent shot from outside the box to give the home side the advantage. Liverpool survived a late penalty thanks to the heroics of new keeper Simon Mignolet in order to bank the three points.
Elsewhere defending title holders Manchester United sent an ominous warning sign to their rivals with a 4-1 demolition of Swansea. Robin van Persie and Danny Wellbeck each grabbing a brace as the Red Devils swept to a comfortable victory in David Moyes’ first match at the helms since taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
Aussie Mile Jedinak made his EPL debut when he led out newly promoted Crystal Palace against Tottenham. The 29-year-old put in a fine performance against Tottenham in midfield but unfortunately the Eagles went down 1-0 thanks to a penalty from new Spurs recruit Robert Soldado.
Chelsea marked the return of Jose Mourinho with a 2-0 victory over Hull City at Stamford Bridge. The enigmatic Portuguese manager on hand for the first time since 2008 to see Frank Lampard atone for his penalty miss with a spectacular free-kick, while Oscar was also on the scoresheet for the Blues.
Arsenal were the surprise loses on the first day of competition, succumbing to a disappointing home defeat against Aston Villa. The Gunners were light on troops due to their inactivity in the transfer market and having suffered a few injuries but the result will heap early pressure on manager Arse Wenger.
In other matches played so far in the round, Norwich and Everton had a 2-2 draw, while Fulham and Southampton both had 1-0 away victories against Sunderland and Stoke respectively. West Ham downed new boys Cardiff City, while Manchester City hosts Newcastle United tonight.
