Australia have demolished Uzbekistan in their Davis Cup World Group play-off in Perth, ensuring they’ll be among the top nations for Thursday’s 2015 tournament draw. Sam Groth and Nick Kyrgios both claimed their singles rubbers in straight-sets on Sunday to seal an empathic 5-0 overall result.
Debutante Groth, who became the 105th player to represent Australia in Davis Cup, needed just over an hour to claim his maiden win over Temur Ismailov. The big-serving Aussie had too much power for his 19-year-old opponent, claiming a 6-3 6-2 triumph.
“It’s out there,” said an ecstatic Groth of his Cup debut. “A dream come true and something I’ve wanted ever since I was a kid.”
“I was a bit shaky at the start. First service game, I could hardly get the ball out of my hand.”
Nick Kyrgios completed the romp in his reverse singles, the teen sensation hammering newcomer Sanjar Fayziev 6-1 6-1 in just 39 minutes. The result meant the Aussies didn’t drop a set in the tie which was held at Cottesloe Tennis Club.
“We didn’t expect that result at all,” said Australian captain Pat Rafter of the 13-set sweep, “Felt a little bit sorry for the two (opposing) young fellas today.”
Rafter will now go into this week’s draw in Dubai full of confidence, with his team now boasting six players inside the men’s top 100.
“We have players who can play on all surfaces now,” Rafter noted. “There are a couple (of potential opponents) which are not just winnable, we would be favourites.”
Meanwhile France and Switzerland will contest this year’s Davis Cup final after the two nations won the weekend’s all-European semi-finals.
The French were too strong for the Czech Republic on the clay of Roland Garros, while Roger Federer led the Swiss, also playing at home, to victory over the Italians.
