Australia has regained its stranglehold on the cricket World Cup, defeating New Zealand in Sunday’s final to lift the trophy for a fifth time.

Tennis and football took a back-seat for at least part of the day at SSC as our members and guests took time out to watch one of the most one-sided one-day finals ever.

Playing in front of over 93,000 fans – the biggest ever to witness a day’s cricket in Australia, Michael Clarke’s men dominated from the outset at the MCG.

Having dismissed New Zealand’s captain Brendon McCullum in the opening over, the Aussies took wickets at regular intervals, eventually dismissing the Kiwis for a modest 183.

Semi-final hero Grant Elliot put up some resistance, compiling a well made 83, but the Aussie bowlers executed their game-plan perfectly, backed up by some wonderful work in the field.

It was never going to be enough and while the Kiwis grabbed the early wicket of Aaron Finch, they only managed two more, with Australia chasing down the total with a third of their overs to spare.

Captain Michael Clarke, playing in his last one-day international, ensured there were no nerves in the chase, making 74 at a-run-a-ball before chopping on with the target in single figures.

The Aussie skipper was ably supported by his heir-apparent, Steve Smith, who finished with a not-out half-century and also hit the winning runs to spark wild celebrations from his teammates.

“I’m over the moon. What a tournament!” Clarke, who announced his retirement from the two shorter formats of the game prior to final, said after the match.

“I think firstly obviously to Brendon [McCullum] and the New Zealand team, they deserve a lot of credit. They’re always a tough team to beat.

“In any sporting event Australia v New Zealand is always an exciting contest. Tonight was no different. Congratulations to him and his team on a wonderful tournament.

“For the support we’ve had through the tournament, thanks to every Australian and every cricket supporter out there.”

In a World Cup that was dominated by batsman – and produced some mammoth totals – it was two bowlers who had to final say on proceedings, with James Faulkner named player of the match and Mitchell Starc awarded player of the tournament.
