An own goal has cost Zenit a home victory against AC Milan in the second round of the UEFA Champions League, which was played out in Europe earlier this week (October 2 – 3, local time).
The 2011-12 Russian Premier League champions found themselves in trouble early on, after goals from Urby Emanuelson and Stephan El Shaarawy put them behind after just 20 minutes.
But Zenit fought back hard thanks to Hulk, the Brazilian scoring on half time before finding the head of Roman Shirokov with a corner minutes after play resumed.
All tied up at 2-2 neither team could find the breakthrough, until a cross from Riccardo Montolivo got Tomas Hubocan into a tangle in front of his own net, accidentally tapping it past Zenit goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev.
It might not have been the cleanest of victories, but AC Milan will just be happy to have earned their first win of the 2012 Champions League, while Zenit will be ruing a mistake which broke their 17 game unbeaten streak at home.
Meanwhile Malaga FC kept their undefeated Champions League record alive, beating Anderlecht 0-3 in Belgium to register the second win of their debut season.
Arsenal also made it two from two with an ugly home victory over Olympiacos. The Gunners were sloppy early on and lucky not to concede a goal, until Gervinho took matters into his own hand, striking with half time in sight.
However Kostas Mitroglou ensured that the two teams went into the break even, heading in a cross from Leandro Greco to shock the home crowd.
Arsenal looked a much stronger team in the second half, with Lukas Podolski putting his team ahead in the 56th minute before Aaron Ramsey was able to push out the scoreline to 3-1 with a goal in injury time.
In other round two results, Real Madrid crushed Ajax 1-4 in Amsterdam while Manchester City were lucky to escape with a 1-1 draw against Dortmund in Manchester.
Chelsea dominated Nordsjaeland 0-4 in Denmark and Juventus could only manage a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk at home.
