The Australian soccer team comfortably brushed aside Lebanon 3-0 in Beirut yesterday, in a result that should build confidence and momentum ahead of next week's FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Jordan.

Play was delayed early on after the stadium floodlights unexpectedly gave out, but as soon as power was restored Australia took control with a goal off the head of Tim Cahill.

Brisbane Roar captain Matt Mckay followed up a few minutes later to make it 2-0 to the Socceroos, but the goals dried up after that despite Australia generally dominating their lesser ranked opponents.

Archie Thompson was able to round out the victory in the 87th minute with a comfortable close range goal, taking the scoreline to 3-0. The only real concern for the away side will be a potential injury to Alex Brosque, who had to be stretchered off after a dodgy tackle.

All eyes will now turn to that crucial qualifying game against the 87th ranked Jordan, with kickoff set to take place at the Amman International Stadium in Amman, Jordan on September 12.

Australia is currently in the middle of the table in their group of the Asia Round Four Brazil 2014 qualifiers, after grinding out a scoreless draw against Oman away and a 1-1 result against top of the table Japan at home in June.

Conversely, Jordan previously lost 0-6 in Japan and drew 1-1 against Iraq at home in their two matches to date.

At the end of round four, the top two teams in each group will advance while the third place finishers will face a considerably more difficult road to qualification. The bottom two teams in each group will be knocked out, so this will be a crucial match for Australia.
